Implementing CRM week 2

Today was our second Collaborative Response Model (CRM) meeting. At Southview Community School we are able to release teachers for CRM meetings by creating “centers” through which students rotate. We used some "full time equivalent" (FTE) to hire a PE specialist, our vice principal has developed a tech/coding class and we have a library period. While the students are rotating through the centers their teachers are participating in CRM meetings. The plan for this week was to follow the same format as last week. We were going to spend the first 40 minutes dialoguing and using structures around several passages from the book (theory) and then after 40 minutes the teachers were going to start to working on some of their projects identified last week (literacy, assessment, numeracy). The results from the survey last week showed that teachers have a solid understanding of CRM, believe it can positively affect learning and found the first meeting worthwhile. The most common concern is that "this too shall pass," and in the next year or two we will drop the model.

After reviewing the survey results from our last meeting, we began with each teacher being assigned excerpts, reading it to themselves, reflecting on it and then taking turns sharing it round robin style. If the quotation stimulated conversation we went with it. We all acknowledge that this is a process, not a race. As eager as we are to move along we understand the importance of “going slow to go fast.” After 40 minutes I asked if they wanted to continue with book work or move on to their projects. Two groups decided that they didn't want to break the momentum of the book and continued with it. The third group spent 40 minutes examining the book and then dove into data they collected through a universal screen. Again, one of our "optimal learning coaches" sat in on all the meetings offering support throughout the process and contributing to the conversations.

I’ve included my agenda. I am certain that it will change from week to week, but it was my initial planning that I had done before our first meeting. Often things change with each group. I also put together CRM binders. I placed some resources from jigsaw learning in them and we referenced them throughout the meeting. Eventually I would like to go all digital and create a Google classroom, site or alternative, but sometimes I feel that having a tangible “hard copy” of things is preferred and familiar. I also borrowed some ideas from jigsaw to create a simple “Team Meeting Notes” doc. For the first two meetings I was the facilitator and the recorder. Our CRT meeting notes will look much different, but for the weekly meetings I wanted something simple. As we move forward, I will become less involved in the weekly meetings. I am fortunate to have a strong group of teachers and district “instructional coaches” so as much as I love getting my elbows dirty, I know that I will likely be pulling back in a month or two and the teachers and the coaches will not need me to help out. The exception will be our CRT meetings that will occur every four weeks. For those meetings, our “Classroom Support Teacher" (inclusion support teacher) and myself will be at every one.
